Aalen has a population around 67,000 and lies in the Kocher valley at the eastern edge of the Swabian Alb in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The Limesmuseum Aalen, built on the site of a Roman cavalry fort, is the largest museum on the UNESCO-listed Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. The fort at Aalen was the largest Roman cavalry garrison north of the Alps, housing around 1,000 soldiers and horses. The Tiefer Stollen (deep tunnel), a former iron ore mine, is accessible by underground boat.
