Boeblingen: IBM Tradition, Schoenbuch Forest, and Stuttgart's Southern Neighbour
Boeblingen has a population around 46,300 and lies immediately south of Stuttgart in Baden-Wuerttemberg. IBM established its German headquarters and development centre here in 1949, making Boeblingen one of the early IT centres in post-war Germany. The Boeblingen airfield, now partly redeveloped, saw the first flight by a motorised aircraft in Germany in 1910 by Eugen Rueck. The Stadtmuseum documents this aviation connection.
The Schoenbuch, a large mixed forest south of Boeblingen, was designated as a Naturpark and provides extensive walking and cycling trails. The Oberer See and Unterer See, two lakes in the town centre, create a recreational focus near the pedestrian zone. Sindelfingen, home to the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant, borders directly to the west. The S-Bahn connects to Stuttgart's centre in around 25 minutes.
