Donaueschingen: Where the Danube Begins in the Black Forest
Donaueschingen claims the symbolic source of the Danube. The Donauquelle, a spring in the Schlosspark, is traditionally regarded as the river's origin, though hydrologically the Danube forms from the confluence of the Brigach and Breg at the edge of town. About 21,600 people live here in the Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The Fuerstenberg brewery, one of Germany's oldest private breweries, has its headquarters in Donaueschingen.
Villingen-Schwenningen is roughly 15 kilometres south. Freiburg im Breisgau lies to the west across the Black Forest. The Donaueschinger Musiktage, a contemporary music festival founded in 1921, is one of the oldest and most important festivals for new music worldwide, premiering works by composers from Hindemith to Stockhausen to the present day.
