Freudenstadt: Germany's Largest Market Square, Black Forest Altitude, and Duke Friedrich's Planned Town
Freudenstadt's Marktplatz, measuring roughly 219 by 216 metres, is the largest in Germany. Duke Friedrich I of Wuerttemberg laid out the town in 1599 as a planned settlement in the Northern Black Forest. The square's L-shaped arcades and the corner-positioned Stadtkirche, with its unusual right-angled nave, follow the original Renaissance plan. The town sits at about 730 metres elevation. Roughly 23,850 inhabitants live here in the Freudenstadt district of Baden-Wuerttemberg.
Nearly the entire old town was destroyed in April 1945 during the French advance and subsequently rebuilt following the historic grid layout. The surrounding Black Forest terrain rises further to the west. The Kniebis pass road connects Freudenstadt to the Rhine valley. Baiersbronn, known for its Michelin-starred restaurants, is directly to the southwest. Horb am Neckar lies to the east. Freudenstadt markets itself as a Heilklimatischer Kurort, a therapeutic climate resort, and draws visitors for hiking and cross-country skiing.
