Heilbronn: Wine City on the Neckar, Experimenta, and Baden-Wuerttemberg's Underrated Industrial Hub
Heilbronn has a population around 121,000 and lies on the Neckar river in northern Baden-Wuerttemberg. The city is the centre of the Wuerttemberger Weinstrasse; vineyards climb the hillsides within the city limits. The Experimenta, Germany's largest science centre, opened a striking new building in 2019 on a Neckar island. The Kilianskirche (St. Kilian's Church) has a Renaissance tower considered one of the first north of the Alps. Heilbronn was 62% destroyed in an Allied air raid on 4 December 1944.
The Bundesgartenschau 2019 transformed a former freight yard into the Neckarbogen urban quarter. Audi has a large site in neighbouring Neckarsulm. The Schwaben brewery traces to 1878. Heinrich von Kleist's play "Das Kaethchen von Heilbronn" (1810) immortalised the city in German literature, though Kleist never visited. Heilbronn is often overshadowed by Stuttgart (50 kilometres south) and Heidelberg (65 kilometres northwest) but has its own economic weight in automotive, food processing, and logistics.
