Karlsruhe: Germany's Court City, the Fan Layout, and Baden's Quiet Capital
Karlsruhe was founded in 1715 by Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach, who designed it as a fan-shaped city radiating from his palace. ZKM (Zentrum fuer Kunst und Medien), housed in a former munitions factory, is one of the world's most important media art centres. Karlsruhe's tram network is extensive; the Stadtbahn runs on tracks through the city centre pedestrian zone. The city sits just north of the Black Forest and about 10 kilometres from the French border.
