Ludwigsburg: Baroque Residenz, Pumpkin Festival, and Wuerttemberg's Former Royal Seat
Ludwigsburg has a population around 88,000 and lies 12 kilometres north of Stuttgart in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The Residenzschloss Ludwigsburg, one of Germany's largest Baroque palaces with 452 rooms, was built between 1704 and 1733 by Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Wuerttemberg. The Bluehendes Barock (Blooming Baroque) palace gardens host the annual Kuerbisausstellung (Pumpkin Exhibition), the world's largest, displaying over 450,000 pumpkins sculpted into elaborate figures.
The Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg, one of Europe's leading film schools, is based here. The Favoriteschloss, a smaller hunting palace nearby, and the Seeschloss Monrepos on an artificial lake complete a trio of palaces. Ludwigsburg was the Wuerttemberg capital from 1718 to 1744. The Marktplatz has an intact Baroque town plan. The city is effectively part of the Stuttgart metropolitan area, connected by S-Bahn in 15 minutes. Porsche's development centre in Weissach is nearby.
