Nuertingen: Hoelderlin's Childhood Town, Neckar Bend, and the Swabian Alb Foothills Market
Nuertingen has a population around 40,200 and lies on the Neckar river in Baden-Wuerttemberg, about 30 kilometres southeast of Stuttgart. Friedrich Hoelderlin, one of the great German poets, spent his childhood and school years here. The Hoelderlinhaus on the Neckarsteige documents his connection to the town. Peter Haertling's 1976 novel brought this Nuertingen period to wider attention.
The Altstadt rises steeply from the Neckar, with the Stadtkirche St. Laurentius at its highest point. The Marktplatz hosts a weekly market. The Hochschule fuer Wirtschaft und Umwelt (University of Applied Sciences) has a campus here, giving the town a student presence. The Tiefenbachtal, a valley south of town, leads towards the Swabian Alb escarpment. The Neckar promenade provides walking paths.
