Pforzheim has a population around 119,000 and sits at the northern edge of the Black Forest where the Enz, Nagold, and Wuerm rivers meet. Known as "Goldstadt" (Gold City) since 1767, when Margrave Karl Friedrich established a watch and jewellery factory, Pforzheim still produces around 75% of German jewellery exports. The Schmuckmuseum (Jewellery Museum) in the Reuchlinhaus is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to jewellery from 5,000 years of history. On 23 February 1945, a British bombing raid destroyed 83% of the city in 22 minutes, killing nearly 18,000 people, one of the most devastating single raids of the war.
The Wildpark and the start of three long-distance Black Forest hiking trails (Westweg, Mittelweg, Ostweg) draw outdoor visitors. Johannes Reuchlin, the Renaissance humanist who fought against the burning of Jewish books, was born here in 1455. Post-war reconstruction was utilitarian; Pforzheim lacks the medieval charm of nearby towns. The city sits between Karlsruhe (25 kilometres west) and Stuttgart (37 kilometres east). Adult companionship follows Baden-Wuerttemberg's regulatory approach.
