Rastatt has a population around 48,000 and lies on the Murg river near the Rhine in Baden-Wuerttemberg, about 20 kilometres south of Karlsruhe. The Schloss Rastatt, completed in 1707, was the first Baroque Residenz on the Upper Rhine, built by Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden-Baden after his victories against the Ottomans. The Schloss Favorite, a summer palace in a park north of the town, is one of the earliest porcelain palaces in Germany.

The Wehrgeschichtliches Museum (military history museum) in the Schloss documents local and national military history. The Bundeswehr has maintained a garrison here. Mercedes-Benz has a factory producing A-Class and B-Class models. The Murgtal extends east into the Black Forest. Baden-Baden is 10 kilometres south.
