Rottenburg: Bishop's Seat, Suelchgau History, and the Neckar Town South of Tuebingen
Rottenburg am Neckar has a population around 42,700 and lies on the Neckar river in Baden-Wuerttemberg, about 12 kilometres south of Tuebingen. Since 1828, Rottenburg has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, making it one of Germany's smaller episcopal towns. The Dom St. Martin, the diocesan cathedral, dates from the 15th century.
The Suelchgaumuseum in the Bischoefliches Palais documents the region's archaeological finds, including Roman remains from the settlement of Sumelocenna. The Neckar runs directly through the old town. Rottenburg absorbed 17 surrounding villages during municipal reforms in the 1970s, giving it a spread-out character. The Wurmlinger Kapelle, a hilltop chapel visible from across the Neckar valley, inspired the poet Ludwig Uhland. The Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule provides Catholic theological education.
