Schwetzingen: Baroque Palace Garden and Asparagus Capital of the Kurpfalz
Schwetzingen is best known for its Schloss and the Schlossgarten, a baroque and English-style garden considered among the finest palace gardens in Germany. The garden contains a mosque-style bathhouse, temples, and elaborate water features laid out in the 18th century for the Electors Palatine. The town has about 22,590 inhabitants and lies in the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis of Baden-Wuerttemberg.
Heidelberg is roughly 10 kilometres east. Mannheim is about 15 kilometres north. The surrounding Upper Rhine Plain produces asparagus commercially, and Schwetzingen has branded itself the Spargelstadt, with an annual asparagus market in spring. The Rokokotheater inside the palace is one of Europe's oldest surviving court theatres and hosts the Schwetzinger Festspiele, a music festival established in 1952 that commissions new opera productions.
The town's position between Heidelberg and Mannheim places it within the Rhein-Neckar metropolitan region. Commuter rail connects Schwetzingen to both cities in under 20 minutes.
