Ulm: World's Tallest Church Steeple, Einstein's Birthplace, and the Danube Border Between Two States
Ulm has a population around 120,000 and sits on the left bank of the Danube in Baden-Wuerttemberg, directly opposite Neu-Ulm in Bavaria. The Ulmer Muenster has the tallest church steeple in the world at 161.53 metres, completed in 1890 after 513 years of construction. Albert Einstein was born at Bahnhofstrasse 20 on 14 March 1879; the house was destroyed in 1944 but a memorial marks the site. The Fischerviertel (Fishermen's Quarter) along the Blau stream is one of southern Germany's most picturesque medieval districts.
The Stadthaus, designed by Richard Meier and opened in 1993, created fierce local debate by placing stark white modernism next to the Gothic Muenster. Ulm had a strong tradition of civic republicanism; the Schwoehaus on the Weinhof is where the mayor still swears an annual oath to the citizens (Schwoermontag). The Wissenschaftsstadt on the Eselsberg houses Universitaet Ulm and research institutes. The Danube forms a genuine cultural border here: Ulm is Swabian (Baden-Wuerttemberg), Neu-Ulm is Bavarian.
