Villingen-Schwenningen has a population around 82,000 and sits on the eastern edge of the Black Forest at around 700 metres above sea level, making it one of Germany's highest cities. The city was created in 1972 by merging Villingen (Baden) and Schwenningen (Wuerttemberg), two towns that had belonged to different states for centuries and retain distinct identities. The European watershed between Rhine and Danube drainage passes through the city; rain falling on one side of certain streets flows to the North Sea, on the other to the Black Sea.
Schwenningen was the centre of the German clock and watchmaking industry; the Uhrenindustriemuseum documents this history. Kienzle, Mauthe, and other clockmakers were based here. Villingen's Altstadt has preserved medieval walls, gates, and the Muenster. The Fasnet (Swabian Carnival) in Villingen is one of the most traditional in the Black Forest, with elaborately carved wooden masks. The Donauquelle (Danube source) in nearby Donaueschingen is a short drive. Adult companionship follows Baden-Wuerttemberg's regulatory approach.
