Where the Tauber river empties into the Main, Wertheim occupies a striking position beneath one of the largest castle ruins in southern Germany. The Burg Wertheim, destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, rises above the old town on a steep promontory. Wertheim sits precisely on the border between Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bayern, with the Main serving as boundary. The Spessart forest rises on the opposite bank.
