Amberg has a population around 44,700 and lies on the Vils river in the Oberpfalz (Upper Palatinate) region of Bayern. The Stadtbrille (city spectacles), a medieval bridge whose twin arches reflect in the Vils to form a spectacle-shaped image, is the town's most photographed landmark. The Altstadt is almost entirely enclosed by its original medieval wall circuit, one of the best-preserved in Germany, with over 100 towers and gates surviving.
Amberg served as capital of the Kurfuerstentum der Pfalz's Upper Palatinate territories and retains a Regierungskanzlei (government chancery) from that era. The Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule (OTH) provides university-level education. Grammer AG, an automotive interior supplier, is headquartered here. The Mariahilfberg pilgrimage church overlooks the town from a wooded hill. Nuremberg is about 65 kilometres west. Adult companionship follows Bayern's regulatory approach.
