Erlangen has a population around 103,000 and lies in Middle Franconia, directly north of Nuremberg. The Neustadt (New Town), laid out in 1686 by Margrave Christian Ernst for Huguenot refugees fleeing France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, is one of Germany's earliest examples of Baroque urban planning. The grid pattern, the Hugenottenkirche, and the Markgrafentheater (1719, one of the oldest surviving Baroque theatres in southern Germany) reflect this French-Protestant heritage.
Siemens Healthineers and Siemens Energy have their headquarters here; the Siemens campus employs over 20,000 people. The Friedrich-Alexander-Universitaet Erlangen-Nuernberg (FAU), shared with Nuremberg, has around 40,000 students and is Bavaria's second-largest university. The Bergkirchweih, held every Whitsun since 1755, is one of Germany's largest beer festivals outside Munich, with beer cellars carved into the hillside. Erlangen has one of Germany's highest proportions of academic workers. Adult companionship follows Bavaria's approach.
