Fuerth has a population around 112,000 and borders Nuremberg so closely that the two cities share a U-Bahn system. Germany's first railway ran between Nuremberg and Fuerth in 1835, a 6-kilometre route pulled by the locomotive "Adler." The Rathaus, designed by Friedrich Buerklein (a student of Leo von Klenze) and completed in 1850, was modelled on the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Ludwig Erhard, father of the post-war Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle) and later Chancellor, was born in Fuerth in 1897.
Fuerth has one of the best-preserved collections of Gruenderzeit architecture in Bavaria, partly because Allied bombing in 1945 was less severe than in Nuremberg. The Jewish community was historically significant; the Juedisches Museum Franken documents centuries of Jewish life in the region. Henry Kissinger was born in Fuerth in 1923 before his family fled to America in 1938. The SpVgg Greuther Fuerth has played in the Bundesliga. The Fuerther Kirchweih (Kärwa) is one of Bavaria's largest folk festivals. Despite the physical overlap with Nuremberg, Fuerth has always insisted on its own identity. Adult companionship follows Bavaria's enforcement approach.
