Harburg: Hamburg's Southern Borough, the Elbe Crossing, and a District With Its Own History
Harburg is Hamburg's southernmost borough with a population around 169,000, sitting on the south bank of the Elbe. Until 1937, Harburg was a separate city in the Prussian province of Hannover; the Greater Hamburg Act absorbed it into the city-state. The Harburger Schloss, dating from the 12th century, is one of Hamburg's oldest structures. The Phoenix-Viertel, a former industrial area around the Harburger Binnenhafen (inner harbour), has been converted into a creative quarter with studios and galleries.
The Technische Universitaet Hamburg (TUHH), founded in 1978, has around 8,000 students and focuses on engineering. The Harburger Berge (Harburg Hills) in the Black Mountains nature reserve are the highest points in Hamburg. The Elbe tunnels and bridges connect Harburg to the northern boroughs. Harburg retains a more working-class feel than gentrified northern boroughs like Eimsbuettel or Altona. Adult companionship follows Hamburg's city-state framework, with the Reeperbahn scene concentrated far to the north.
