Kitzingen lies on the Main river in the Landkreis Kitzingen of Bayern, with about 21,390 inhabitants. The town is at the centre of one of Franken's main wine-growing areas, and Silvaner grapes dominate the surrounding vineyards. The Alte Mainbruecke, a stone bridge crossing the Main, and the Falterturm, a leaning medieval tower used as a carnival museum, are landmarks in the compact old town.
Wuerzburg is roughly 20 kilometres northwest. The Steigerwald hills rise to the east. Kitzingen holds a national weather record: in July 2015, the weather station here recorded 40.3 degrees Celsius, then Germany's highest confirmed temperature. The town also has a significant US military history, with a former US Army garrison that closed in 2006.
