Koenigsbrunn has about 27,500 residents and lies on the Lechfeld plain south of Augsburg in Bayern. The town grew rapidly after 1945 as refugees from eastern Europe settled on the gravel terrace above the Lech. The Mercateum, a large globe sculpture at a roundabout, has become an unlikely local landmark. Koenigsbrunn is one of Bayern's youngest towns, receiving city rights only in 2019.
Augsburg is directly to the north. Bobingen lies to the southwest. Friedberg (Bayern) is across the Lech to the east. The Lechfeld was the site of the 955 Battle of Lechfeld, where Otto I defeated the Hungarians. Munich is about 60 kilometres east. The flat Lechfeld terrace stretches south towards Landsberg.
