Lichtenberg is a neighbourhood in Berlin's borough of the same name with a population around 41,400. The Stasi Museum in the former headquarters of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) on Ruschestrasse documents the GDR's surveillance apparatus; Erich Mielke's preserved office is one of Berlin's most visited Cold War sites.
The Dong Xuan Center, a Vietnamese wholesale and retail market, is the largest Asian trading centre in Berlin and reflects the neighbourhood's connection to former GDR contract workers from Vietnam. The Tierpark Berlin, eastern Germany's largest zoo at 160 hectares, lies in the adjacent Friedrichsfelde area. The Rathaus Lichtenberg, built in the early 20th century, serves the borough administration. Lichtenberg has undergone gentrification pressure as rents in central Berlin have pushed residents eastward. The S-Bahn and tram connect to Alexanderplatz in about 15 minutes.
