Memmingen has a population around 41,100 and lies in Bavarian Swabia, at the western edge of the Allgaeu. In 1525, the Twelve Articles of the German Peasants' War were drafted here, considered one of the earliest written demands for human rights in Europe. Albrecht von Wallenstein quartered his troops in the town during the Thirty Years' War, an event re-enacted in the Wallensteinfestspiele every four years.
The Altstadt is enclosed by a remarkably complete medieval wall with towers and a water-filled moat, the Stadtbach system. The Rathaus on the Marktplatz dates from the 16th century. The Kreuzherrenkloster houses the Stadtmuseum. Allgaeu Airport Memmingen, used by Ryanair and Wizz Air, makes the town a budget travel hub. The Strigel and Herkomer families of painters originated here. The Allgaeu Alps are visible to the south. Munich is about 110 kilometres east by train.
