Olching lies on the Amper river in the Fuerstenfeldbruck district of Bayern, about 20 kilometres west of Munich. Roughly 23,950 people live here. The S-Bahn connects Olching to Munich's Hauptbahnhof in about 25 minutes, and the town has grown steadily as a residential satellite of the Bavarian capital. The Amperauen, the river meadows along the Amper, provide a green corridor through the urban area. Fuerstenfeldbruck, the district capital, is directly to the south. Maisach lies to the west.
The Olchinger See, an artificial lake created from gravel extraction, is a popular swimming spot in summer. The surrounding terrain is flat Schotterebene, the gravel plain deposited by glacial rivers from the Alps. Munich's western suburbs merge almost seamlessly into Olching's eastern edge, blurring the boundary between the two municipalities.
