Traunreut lies in the Landkreis Traunstein of Bayern, with about 21,240 inhabitants. Unlike most Bavarian towns, Traunreut is largely a post-war creation. The settlement grew around a former munitions factory site, repurposed after 1945 to house displaced persons and refugees from the former eastern territories. Industrial companies, including automotive supplier Hella, established factories here in the following decades. The town received its Stadtrecht in 1960.
Traunstein is roughly 10 kilometres south. The Chiemsee is about 15 kilometres west. The flat terrain between the Traun and Alz rivers gives way to the Alpine foothills to the south, with the Chiemgau Alps visible on clear days.
