Weiden: Porcelain Town, Max Reger's Youth, and the Upper Palatinate's Northern Centre
Weiden in der Oberpfalz has a population around 42,600 and lies in the Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz) region of Bavaria, about 100 kilometres east of Nuernberg. Max Reger, the composer, spent his formative years in Weiden and studied organ at the Stadtpfarrkirche St. Michael. The Max-Reger-Haus preserves the apartment where he lived and composed. The Altstadt retains its rectangular medieval layout with the Oberer and Unterer Markt (upper and lower market squares). The Altes Rathaus dates from the 16th century. Weiden served as a Cold War US Army garrison town until the 1990s. The Oberpfaelzer Wald (Upper Palatinate Forest) and the Czech border lie to the east.
