Brandenburg an der Havel: Cathedral Island, Havel Waterways, and the State That Took a City's Name
Brandenburg an der Havel has a population around 60,000 and lies on the Havel river about 70 kilometres west of Berlin. The city gave its name to the Mark Brandenburg and, by extension, to the modern federal state. The Dom St. Peter und Paul on the Dominsel (Cathedral Island) dates from 1165 and anchors a complex of medieval ecclesiastical buildings. The Altstadtkirche St. Gotthardt and the Katharinenkirche in the Neustadt mark the two medieval town centres that existed side by side.
The Havel lakes surrounding the city create an extensive waterway network used for sailing, canoeing, and excursions. The Steintorturm, a medieval gate tower, is the city's most recognisable landmark. The Industriemuseum documents Brandenburg's steel and engineering past; the BSG Stahl Brandenburg football club references this heritage. Population has declined significantly since reunification.
