Cottbus has a population around 85,000 and is the second-largest city in Brandenburg, situated in the Niederlausitz (Lower Lusatia) region. The city is the cultural centre of the Sorbs, a Slavic minority who have lived in the Lausitz for over a thousand years; bilingual German-Sorbian street signs are visible throughout. The Brandenburgische Technische Universitaet (BTU) Cottbus-Senftenberg has around 7,000 students and occupies a striking modern campus.
The Branitzer Park, designed by Prince Hermann von Pueckler-Muskau in the 1840s, features two artificial pyramids, including one in a lake that serves as Pueckler's burial site. The Staatstheater Cottbus, an Art Nouveau building from 1908, is one of the finest theatre buildings in eastern Germany. The Lausitz was Germany's main lignite (brown coal) mining region; the Strukturwandel (structural transformation) after reunification devastated the local economy but also created artificial lake landscapes from former open-pit mines. The Cottbuser Ostsee, currently filling from a former mine, will become Germany's largest artificial lake. Adult companionship follows Brandenburg's regulatory approach.
