Eberswalde has a population around 42,000 and lies about 50 kilometres northeast of Berlin in Brandenburg. The Finow Canal, Germany's oldest still-navigable artificial waterway dating from the 17th century, passes through the town. The metalworking and steelmaking industries shaped Eberswalde from the 19th century; the town was sometimes called "Waldstadt" (forest city) for its position at the edge of the Schorfheide.
The Schorfheide-Chorin biosphere reserve, a UNESCO-recognised landscape of forests, lakes, and moors, lies directly north. The Eberswalde hoard, a collection of 81 gold objects from the Bronze Age discovered here in 1913, is one of Germany's most significant prehistoric finds (the original is in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow). The Hochschule fuer nachhaltige Entwicklung (University for Sustainable Development) Eberswalde focuses on forestry and environmental sciences. The Familiengarten, a park along the Finow Canal, provides recreation. Berlin is reachable by regional train in about 45 minutes. Adult companionship follows Brandenburg's regulatory framework.
