Eisenhuettenstadt has a population around 32,100 and lies in Brandenburg, on the Oder-Spree canal near the Polish border. The town was built from scratch beginning in 1950 as a socialist model city for workers at the new Eisenhuettenkombinat Ost steelworks. Originally named Stalinstadt, it was renamed in 1961. The architecture of the earliest residential complexes (Wohnkomplex I-III) follows the National Building Tradition style of the early GDR, with neoclassical facades and planned public spaces.
The Dokumentationszentrum Alltagskultur der DDR preserves everyday objects and cultural artefacts from East German life. Frankfurt (Oder) is about 25 kilometres north. The Schlaubetal nature park provides forest and valley hiking to the west. Guben and the Polish border town of Gubin are to the south. The steel industry continues in reduced form. Adult companionship follows Brandenburg's regulatory standards.
