Hennigsdorf has about 26,100 inhabitants and lies on the Havel canal in the Oberhavel district of Brandenburg, directly bordering Berlin. Steelmaking at the Hennigsdorfer Stahl defined the town from the late 19th century. Bombardier (now Alstom) produces railway vehicles at a major plant. Hennigsdorf was part of the GDR, with its border to West Berlin running through the town.
Berlin-Spandau is immediately to the south. Oranienburg is about 15 kilometres north. Velten lies to the east. The S25 line connects Hennigsdorf to Berlin's city centre. The Havel and its canal system provide the waterway axis. Post-reunification, Hennigsdorf transitioned from heavy industry towards diversified manufacturing and commuter settlement.
