Hohen Neuendorf has about 21,890 inhabitants and lies directly north of Berlin in the Landkreis Oberhavel of Brandenburg. The S-Bahn line S1 connects the town to central Berlin in about 30 minutes, making it a commuter settlement. During the division of Germany, the Berlin Wall ran through the southern part of the municipality, and a section of the border fortification is preserved as a memorial near the Bergfelde cemetery.
Oranienburg is roughly 10 kilometres northwest. Birkenwerder borders to the west. The terrain is flat Brandenburg sandplain, with pine forest and the Havel river system nearby. Hohen Neuendorf's population grew rapidly after reunification as Berliners moved to the greener suburbs north of the city.
