Neuruppin has a population around 31,900 and lies on the western shore of the Ruppiner See in Brandenburg, about 80 kilometres northwest of Berlin. The novelist and journalist Theodor Fontane was born here in 1819, and the town markets itself as Fontanestadt. A monument to Fontane stands on the Karl-Marx-Strasse. The architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel was also born in Neuruppin in 1781.
After a devastating fire in 1787, the town was rebuilt in a neoclassical grid plan, giving the centre an unusually regular layout for a Brandenburg town. The Ruppiner See extends several kilometres and allows swimming and boating. Rheinsberg is about 25 kilometres north. The Ruppiner Schweiz, a hilly lake landscape, lies to the northeast. Berlin is reachable by regional train. Adult companionship follows Brandenburg's regulatory standards.
