Petershagen has around 27,100 inhabitants and spans a large area along the Weser in the Minden-Luebbecke district of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The municipality contains several Weser Renaissance manor houses, including Schloss Petershagen overlooking the river. White stork colonies nest on church towers and barn roofs across the scattered villages. Petershagen is NRW's largest municipality by area despite its modest population.
Minden is about 15 kilometres south. Nienburg (Weser) lies roughly 30 kilometres north in Niedersachsen. The Weser forms the eastern boundary, with Niedersachsen on the opposite bank. Lahde, a constituent village, has a power station on the river. The flat Weser marshlands are used for dairy farming and arable crops.
