Rathenow has roughly 27,100 residents and lies on the Havel river in the Havelland district of Brandenburg. The town has been called the "Stadt der Optik" (town of optics) since Johann Heinrich August Duncker established lens grinding here in 1801. The optical industry persisted through both German states and still maintains a presence. The Optikpark, a garden laid out on a Havel island, was created for the 2015 Bundesgartenschau.
Brandenburg an der Havel is about 30 kilometres south. Berlin is roughly 70 kilometres east. Stendal lies around 50 kilometres northwest in Sachsen-Anhalt. The Havel here flows through a wide floodplain. Rathenow's Bismarck tower offers views across the flat Havelland landscape.
