Schwedt has roughly 30,200 residents and sits on the Oder river in Brandenburg, close to the Polish border. The PCK Raffinerie, one of the largest oil refineries in northeastern Germany, dominates the local economy and was built during the GDR era as part of the Erdölverarbeitungswerk Schwedt. The refinery processes crude oil arriving via the Druzhba pipeline from Russia.
The Nationalpark Unteres Odertal, Germany's only floodplain national park, begins directly east of the town. The Oder floodplains support rare bird species and seasonal flooding creates a landscape reminiscent of the Biebrza marshes in Poland. Angermünde lies about 25 kilometres south. Szczecin (Stettin) in Poland is roughly 60 kilometres north. Eberswalde is about 50 kilometres southwest. The town lost significant population after reunification.
