Altona: From Danish Territory to Hamburg's Most Gentrified Borough
Altona was a separate city under Danish rule until 1864, then Prussian, and only became part of Hamburg in 1937 under the Greater Hamburg Act. Around 250,000 people live here. The Altonaer Rathaus (1898) still stands on the Platz der Republik as a reminder of that independence. Ottensen, once a working-class district of factories and dockworkers, has transformed into one of Hamburg's trendiest neighbourhoods with converted industrial spaces, independent shops, and high rents.
