Eimsbuettel is Hamburg's most densely populated borough, with around 269,000 residents packed into an area west of the Aussenalster lake. The Schanzenviertel, partly in Eimsbuettel and partly in Hamburg-Mitte, is the centre of Hamburg's alternative scene. The Rote Flora, a squatted former theatre on Schulterblatt, has been occupied since 1989 and remains a political flashpoint. The Grindelviertel around the university is full of students; before 1933, it was the heart of Hamburg's Jewish community.
Eppendorfer Baum and Osterstrasse form the main shopping axes. Hagenbeck's Tierpark, the zoo founded in 1907 that pioneered open enclosures without bars, sits in the Stellingen district. The Isebek canal runs through the borough and freezes over in cold winters. Eimsbuettel elected Germany's first Green Party mayor of a major city district (Bezirksamtsleiter) in 2008. Adult companionship here operates through private arrangements, with the Schanzenviertel providing a more relaxed social environment than Hamburg's eastern boroughs.
