Hamburg-Mitte: The Reeperbahn, the Port, and the Centre of It All
Hamburg-Mitte is the central borough of Hamburg, covering St. Pauli, St. Georg, HafenCity, Wilhelmsburg, and the Hauptbahnhof area. The population is around 301,000. This borough contains most of what visitors associate with Hamburg: the Elbphilharmonie concert hall (completed 2017, cost 866 million euros), the Speicherstadt warehouse district (UNESCO World Heritage since 2015), and the Landungsbruecken ferry terminal. HafenCity is Europe's largest inner-city urban development project, adding 157 hectares to Hamburg's centre.
St. Pauli is where the Reeperbahn runs, Hamburg's famous entertainment street. The Reeperbahn stretches 930 metres and gives its name to the surrounding district. FC St. Pauli, the football club with a skull-and-crossbones flag, plays at the Millerntor-Stadion. St. Georg, east of the Hauptbahnhof, has historically been Hamburg's most prominent area for adult services outside of St. Pauli. The borough's character ranges from corporate HafenCity to gritty St. Pauli within walking distance.
