Baunatal has around 28,200 residents and lies directly south of Kassel in the Kassel district of Hessen. The Volkswagen Kassel plant, VW's largest components factory, dominates the town's economy and employs several thousand workers. Baunatal was formed in 1966 by merging several villages and grew rapidly with the VW expansion. The Stadtpark offers swimming, sports facilities, and open green space.
Kassel is immediately to the north. Schauenburg is to the west. The Bauna and Fulda rivers flow through the municipal area. The Habichtswald nature park begins west of Baunatal. Fritzlar is about 25 kilometres to the south. Baunatal has developed from a rural area into a compact industrial suburb within a single generation.
