Darmstadt: Jugendstil Colony, Space Operations, and Hessen's Science City South of Frankfurt
Darmstadt has a population around 140,000 and styles itself "Wissenschaftsstadt" (Science City). Element 110 was synthesised at GSI and named Darmstadtium. The Mathildenhoehe, an Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) artists' colony established by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig in 1899, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. The Hochzeitsturm (Wedding Tower) on the hill is the city's most recognisable silhouette.
The TU Darmstadt, founded in 1877, has around 25,000 students and is one of Germany's leading technical universities. Merck KGaA, the pharmaceutical and chemical company, has been headquartered here since 1668. Darmstadt lies 30 kilometres south of Frankfurt. The Luisenplatz is the central square; the Jugendstilbad, an Art Nouveau swimming pool from 1909, is still in use.
