Dreieich has a population around 40,400 and lies in Hessen, about 15 kilometres south of Frankfurt am Main. The municipality was formed in 1977 by merging five communities: Buchschlag, Dreieichenhain, Goetzenhain, Offenthal, and Sprendlingen. The name refers to the medieval Dreieich forest, a royal hunting ground. Burg Hayn in Dreieichenhain, a ruined medieval castle, is the historical centrepiece.
Dreieichenhain retains its medieval town wall and the half-timbered Fahrgasse. Sprendlingen, the largest district, functions as the commercial centre. The Frankfurter Kreuz motorway junction lies just north, making Dreieich well-connected by road. The S-Bahn reaches Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof in about 20 minutes. The Naturschutzgebiet Hausweiher is a wetland reserve. The Burgfestspiele Dreieichenhain, an open-air theatre festival in the castle ruins, runs each summer. Adult companionship is regulated under Hessen's framework.
