Eschwege has about 21,190 inhabitants and lies on the Werra river in the Werra-Meissner-Kreis of Hessen. The Landgrafenschloss, a Renaissance palace above the river, and the half-timbered houses along the Stad and Obermarkt define the old town. The Leuchtberg, a wooded hill south of town with a viewing tower, offers panoramic views across the Werra valley to the Meissner plateau.
Kassel is about 50 kilometres west. The former inner-German border ran just east of Eschwege, and the Grenzmuseum Schifflersgrund near the town documents the history of the division. The Hoher Meissner, at 753 metres the highest point in Nordhessen, rises to the southwest. Potash mining in the Werra valley has been economically significant but also controversial due to saline wastewater discharge into the river.
