Friedrichsdorf im Taunus: Huguenot Heritage and the Birthplace of Zwiebacks
Friedrichsdorf was founded in 1687 by French Huguenot refugees granted asylum by Landgrave Friedrich II of Hessen-Homburg. The town's French Protestant roots remained visible for generations: French was still spoken in some families into the 20th century, and the Huguenot heritage is documented in the local museum. About 24,400 people live here in the Hochtaunuskreis of Hessen.
The Zwieback, the twice-baked bread product, was introduced to Friedrichsdorf by its Huguenot settlers. The Pauly bakery produced it here from the early 19th century. Philipp Reis, who demonstrated one of the first telephone devices in 1861, taught at the Garnier'sche Institut in Friedrichsdorf. His workshop is preserved as a memorial.
Bad Homburg vor der Hoehe is directly adjacent to the south. Frankfurt is about 20 kilometres to the southwest. The Taunus hills rise to the northwest. Friedrichsdorf's population has grown as a commuter town within the Frankfurt orbit, with the S-Bahn providing connections into the city.
