Griesheim has about 25,300 residents and lies in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district of Hessen. The August-Euler-Flugplatz, established in 1908, was one of Germany's first airfields and is named after the country's first licensed pilot. Inland sand dune areas around Griesheim, remnants of post-glacial wind deposits, host rare dry grassland flora and are protected as nature reserves. The town functions primarily as a residential satellite of Darmstadt.
Darmstadt is directly to the east, about 5 kilometres away. Gross-Gerau lies to the north. Pfungstadt is to the south. The Hessisches Ried, the flat Rhine valley plain west of the Odenwald, characterises the landscape. The sandy soils here differ markedly from the loam-based farmland further north. Griesheim's population grew rapidly in the postwar decades due to its proximity to Darmstadt.
