Gross-Gerau is the administrative seat of the Gross-Gerau district in Hessen, with roughly 23,650 inhabitants. The town sits in the centre of the Hessisches Ried, the flat Rhine valley plain between Darmstadt and the Rhine. Asparagus farming on the sandy Ried soils is a regional tradition, and Gross-Gerau holds an annual Spargelmarkt in spring. The Stadtkirche and the Fasanerie park area are the main landmarks in an otherwise unremarkable townscape shaped by postwar development.
Darmstadt is about 15 kilometres to the east. Mainz lies roughly 20 kilometres to the northwest, across the Rhine. Ruesselsheim with its Opel factory is directly to the north. Frankfurt airport is within easy reach. The flat terrain here rarely rises more than a few metres above the Rhine floodplain, and groundwater levels are high. The Schwarzbach stream runs through the area.
