Maintal has a population around 38,300 and lies directly east of Frankfurt am Main in Hessen, on the north bank of the Main river. The town was created in 1974 by merging four villages: Bischofsheim, Doernigheim, Hochstadt, and Wachenbuchen. Each retains its own centre and local identity. Maintal functions largely as a residential suburb of Frankfurt.
The Mainuferweg, a cycling and walking path along the river, connects toward Frankfurt and Hanau. Hochstadt has a small half-timbered village core. The Bischofsheimer Friedhof contains an old cemetery chapel. Doernigheim's Main riverbank area is popular for recreation. Frankfurt's S-Bahn reaches the Konstablerwache in about 20 minutes.
