Muehlheim am Main has roughly 28,500 inhabitants and lies on the southern bank of the Main river in the Offenbach district of Hessen. The town developed around milling and leather industries, with post-war growth turning it into a residential suburb of Frankfurt. The Dietesheimer Steinbrueche, flooded former basalt quarries, serve as a nature reserve with clear swimming lakes.
Offenbach am Main is directly to the west. Hanau is about 10 kilometres east. Frankfurt's city centre is roughly 15 kilometres northwest. The Main cycle path passes along the riverbank. Muehlheim's population has grown through migration, making it one of the more diverse smaller towns in the Rhine-Main area.
