The Naumburger Dom, a late Romanesque and early Gothic cathedral, received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2018. Its 13th-century donor figures, particularly Uta von Ballenstedt and Ekkehard von Meissen, are among the finest medieval sculptures in Europe.
The Saale-Unstrut wine region, Germany's most northerly quality wine area, surrounds the town. Vineyard terraces line the river valleys. Weissenfels is about 20 kilometres north. Jena is roughly 30 kilometres south. Bad Koesen is nearby with its Gradierwerk salt graduation tower. The Altstadt has a well-preserved Renaissance market square.
