Riedstadt has about 21,360 inhabitants and lies in the Kreis Gross-Gerau of Hessen. The municipality was formed in 1977 from five previously independent villages in the Hessisches Ried, the flat Rhine floodplain between Darmstadt and the Rhine. The Kuehlkopf-Knoblochsaue nature reserve, a former Rhine island and one of Hessen's largest nature reserves, extends from Riedstadt's western boundary into the river. Asparagus cultivation on the sandy Ried soils is economically significant.
Darmstadt is about 15 kilometres northeast. Gross-Gerau, the district capital, borders to the north. The landscape is entirely flat, criss-crossed by drainage ditches and irrigation channels necessary because the water table in the Ried lies close to the surface.
